The Molecular Basis of Homeostasis in Epithelia

Using an in vivo model of tissue homeostasis we also study how hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) are transformed in cancer and whether this process mirrors development in reverse.  We identified HFSCs as cells of origin for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, and determined that the inherent quiescence of HFSCs acts as a tumor suppressor.  We are currently working to understand how this quiescence is maintained at the molecular level.
